To truly understand how I juggle my life, it’s important to first provide a quick snapshot of some of my roles, tasks and struggles:
- I am a mom to a very active toddler
- I am a Senior Sales Trainer for a telecommunication company – I’ve been here for 11 years and work full-time
- I am a student working on my second Master’s degree (MBA) – I currently have a BS in Business and a MS in Project Management (I love school, I can’t help it)
- I have a partner (father to my child)
- I somewhat have a life outside of all of this – I guess this would be the fun part of my life
- I blog here and there
- I try to eat healthy
So how do I juggle my life you ask? Well, I am a huge planner. I’m here for the white board combined with a physical planner and of course the support of my family. It’s not easy and some days are stressful, but it can be done. So, I’m going to show you a few of my favorite tips to remain on track and still get enough sleep so you don’t look like Felicia from Next Friday every morning. Eeeek.
1. The support of my family, whether it’s the babysitting help, my partner taking our son to another room or just the positive words of encouragement is super helpful. I fully understand that not everyone has this kind of support and honestly, I don’t know what I would do without my parents, partner, siblings, cousins and close friends. Shout out to the moms who do everything I do and more being a single mom or not having a great relationship with your family. I look up to you.
2. Physical Planner and Calendar
I should add that I am not a virtual person in terms of having everything on my phone or laptop. This does not work for me because I get instant satisfaction when I complete a task and take a pen to check it off. Call me crazy, but I know other folks in the planner community who are the same. I should also say that many moons ago, I tried the whole phone thing, but I was less productive – so actually using a pen and planner is my absolute jam.
As you can see from my planner (every week is like this), I make sure to hit on everyday tasks like school, work, health, hair, groceries, blogging, meetings/ calls and financials. I even sprinkle key tasks for my son, like reading (I am getting in the habit of making sure I read at least every other night) and deep conditioning his dry hair. Yes, I have stickers and these are truly visually appealing, but also help me focus on specific areas of my planner. I also draw in my own little check boxes so I again, I can get the feeling of accomplishment. Actually, the more I write about this, the more crazy I’m making myself seem, but trust me this works. lol!
Planning DOES NOT start the week of! Read that again. To ensure full productivity as a planner, I look at my calendar 2-3 weeks in advance to ensure I have everything in place and can even leave room for spontaneous things or one-off situations. For example, I know that I have to deep condition every Sunday so why not add it? I know certain bills are due at a specific point in time and again, why not add it? The whole point of a planner is to plan, not just write things down for the fun of it.
3. Have a Routine
I have a pretty regular routine that not only helps me stay on track, but it also helps my son stay on track. My Monday – Friday schedule is basically the same and I’m a little more spontaneous on weekends (again, I sound like a boring, old lady, but it works).
A Typical Day (working from home schedule due to quarantine life)
- 7:15AM – Work out if scheduled
- 8AM – Get up when not working out (I’m getting smacked in the face by my son around this time)
- Make breakfast
- 9AM – Start working and look at all calendars to make sure there were no changes and that it aligns with my planner
- 1PM – Lunch time with my son and also do some of my homework
- 5-30PM-6PM – Stop working
- 6PM – 1.5 hours of homework if I have any that week, if not, go play with my son
- 7PM – Make dinner and have dinner
- 8PM – Fun: Draft a blog for my readers (but not post until edited), read, watch crime shows, Netflix, spend time with parents or siblings, whatever comes up.
- 9PM – Give my son a bath and put him to bed (I know this is late, but it’s what works right now) I also normally lay down at this time as well, but because I’m a slave to social media, I probably end up going to sleep around 11PM.
Note: As mentioned in my Covid-19 story, my partner is currently quarantined in another home (he got it bad and it’s been about 2 months); however, we will be reunited in a week or so, so this routine will change a bit, but not too much, because I’m crazy like that and a creature of habit. lol
Also, throughout the entire day, I participate in group texting, check in on my family, friends, coworkers, and social media. I find time.
